A week ago I caught myself in one of my usual brainless content binge sessions on social media. I would spend a maximum of 5 minutes on each platform, refreshing the feed like a madman before switching to another one.
My phone screen time averages around 3.5 hours (according to iPhone analytics). I know it's not a world record, but it's a lot for someone who is 31 years old with a family and a job. And I'm not even including time spent on my laptop.
While I'm not working, I spend most of my waking hours staring at a screen and consuming other people's content. The trend is obvious - my screen time is increasing, and the quality of content I consume is decreasing.
Back in the day, I would go online if I needed to find information about something or learn something new. I would get the information and get back to the analog world. Now the lines between the real world and the digital world are blurred. I can't even distinguish them.
I'm turning into a digital zombie.
I feel unproductive.
My attention span is ruined.
My creative juices are drained.
This feels like an infinite cycle.
Isn't that a typical presentation of brain rot? I think so.
The only solution I see here is to stop consuming and start creating. Output > input. I need to start learning again, and there's no better way to learn than by diving into something completely new to me.
In this digital era it makes the most sense to become a generalist - someone who has many different skills and can combine them to create solutions to different problems.
My goal is to build a digital product business from zero by stacking skills I don't possess yet:
- Writing
- Marketing
- Sales
- Building an email list
- Design
- Video production
- Creating products & offers
- Crafting effective ads
- Building an e-commerce store
- Making my first dollar online
- And the list goes on...
I want to create an extra source of income and later scale it, so I can spend more time with family and not sweat when I need to take a few days off work. I want to do things that feed my creativity.
I know I'm not alone. A lot of millennials feel stuck in their current situation and wanting for more meaningful work and life experiences. It's time to take control back.
Online Soup is my journey to break free from digital consumption and dive into creation. I'm starting at ground zero, and I'm inviting you to learn alongside me.
I'll share:
- New skills I'm learning
- Challenges I'm facing
